What is Bando?

Bando is a comprehensive traditional martial art from Burma (Myanmar) with ancient roots dating back thousands of years. Often called "Burmese Boxing" or "Way of Discipline," it combines striking techniques, animal-based fighting styles, weapons training, and strategic combat methods. The system features nine animal forms—including the tiger, cobra, panther, bull, eagle, and python—each mimicking the movements and fighting strategies of these creatures. Bando emphasizes practical self-defense, incorporating powerful kicks, punches, elbow and knee strikes, joint locks, and throws. Traditional training includes physical conditioning, meditation practices, and both armed and unarmed combat techniques. Though less internationally known than other Southeast Asian martial arts, Bando continues to be preserved both in Myanmar and abroad, particularly through organizations like the American Bando Association.
