The edTPA Health Education, a teacher performance assessment tool that appraises teaching quality and effectiveness, is a requirement in a growing number of states: Preservice health educators must pass it in order to become certified to teach in K-12 schools.

This assessment is challenging for HETE students, but now preservice health educators have a resource to help them prepare. A new digital resource, the Health Education edTPA Online Preparation Guide, will help them understand the requirements of the edTPA, apply the components of the edTPA to the unique discipline of health education, and use their knowledge and skills to successfully complete the edTPA during their student teaching.

This handy resource offers practical step-by-step instructions for preparing for and passing the edTPA. It also will enable HETE instructors to increase the edTPA passing rate of their students by helping them understand the assessment requirements, align their course outcomes and activities with those requirements, and incorporate assessments that are in sync with edTPA scoring.

A key feature of Health Education edTPA Online Preparation Guide is its videos:

• Four videos, totaling more than 25 minutes of presentations, cover how to prepare for the various components of the edTPA.
• Seven videos, totaling over 40 minutes, show actual classroom instruction and students engaged in learning.

Stacy Furness, EdD, is a faculty member in the health and human performance department at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls (UWRF) and is the assistant dean in the College of Education and Professional Studies. She is the program coordinator for the Health Education Teacher Education Program and the edTPA coordinator for all teacher preparation programs at UWRF. She received her bachelor of science degree in health education and specialist degree in education administration from Minnesota State University at Mankato. She earned her education doctorate in leadership from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. She has presented at numerous regional and national conferences, including multiple presentations at the national SHAPE conference on health education, teacher preparation, and the edTPA.
